William B. Smullin was a graduate of Willamette University in journalism; Patricia D. Smullin graduated with a degree in psychology from the University of Washington. Higher education was important to the Smullins. During their lifetimes they gave multiple gifts to colleges and universities for facilities and scholarships.
The Smullin Foundation supports Patricia D. & William B. Smullin Scholarship Funds at six different colleges and universities:
- Cal Poly Humboldt
- Oregon Institute of Technology
- Rogue Community College
- Southern Oregon University

- Willamette University
Smullin scholarship recipients must demonstrate financial need and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5. They must have demonstrated a belief in the importance of free enterprise — the independent spirit and entrepreneurial initiative that individuals bring to their communities through their business endeavors — something William B. Smullin highly valued during the years he developed his broadcasting businesses.

“I have been working full-time as a dental assistant for five years while going to school part time but I’m ready to finally give it my all to pursue dentistry. I will be the first in my family to graduate from a four-year university and I just want to be able to give back to my parents what they have given to me. I only hope to make everyone around me proud. I have to provide for my wife and sister and I know that chasing my dreams will require a lot of sacrifice. This scholarship has given my family and I the financial liberty to be able to focus on my studies and better prepare myself for applying to dental programs in the future.”

“I am going into my third year at Oregon Tech and will just now be starting the Dental Hygiene Program, which I am looking forward to because I am super excited to start doing some hands-on work! I chose Dental Hygiene as my major because I have always had an interest in the dental field. I have so much appreciation for this scholarship. Getting the news that I received this scholarship was one of the most exciting moments for me after graduation!”

“Thank you so much for supporting me and my future. I have a passion for helping others and I have learned that passion is a powerful tool. I worked hard to better my school and community through community service, leadership, and FFA. From food drives and a school garden to community clean-up and elementary outreach, I have seen what a huge difference a small act can make. I want to work in a field that is both intriguing and challenging, but also a career that benefits others rather than just myself. Nursing is something I feel called to do in order to make a difference in people’s lives.”

“Art has always been a means of expressing myself and sharing my emotions to others in a way that they themselves may interpret. I plan to earn my degree at Southwestern and then move to Western Governors University to earn my bachelor’s degree in marketing. I will focus on logo and web design. To have a career in art would be an absolute dream come true. I simply cannot thank you enough for your generous donation to my future.”

“I am very grateful to have the continued ability to pursue my education at Willamette. I am the vice president of the College Democrats where we have discussions about political issues of the day and work to promote involvement in state and local elections. I also help lead a small group for queer identifying and questioning Christians where we can talk about our shared experiences with sexuality, gender and religion in a safe and fun space. My classes have been going very well this semester, and having a degree of financial security, which is helped by this scholarship, is appreciated.”
